See yourself at Wharton this summer? Or maybe next?

14.05 What does it take to get accepted?

Do you know the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania? Its MBA programs are often ranked Number One in the world, especially in finance. In addition, UPenn is the only Ivy League university offering an undergraduate degree in business.

But did you know that Wharton offers extensive summer programs for high school students?

If courses like Essentials of Entrepreneurship, Essentials of Finance, Leadership in the Business World or Data Science Academy sound like exactly what you've been looking for, check out Wharton Global Youth.

The final deadline for most of their on-campus programs is April 5, 2023. But if you're considering applying for this summer, don't wait another day! The priority deadline was already on January 25, 2023, and I'll have more to say about that in a moment.

As the Wharton website advises:

Admission to Wharton Global Youth Programs is highly selective.

Successful applicants typically demonstrate:

  • Minimum 3.3 unweighted GPA, or equivalent (minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA preferred for Leadership in the Business World and the Management and Technology Summer Institute).

  • Thoughtful, well-written essays that express interest in the program content.

  • Recommendations that convey academic performance and potential.

  • An array of extracurricular activities and/or personal achievements that denote intellectual curiosity, ability to collaborate, initiative and ambition, or diversity of interests and ideas.

If you are in 11th grade (or the equivalent), you can take your chances and apply right now. My advice would be to contact the program first to ask whether in fact there are places still available.

More importantly, if you are a younger student, look ahead! Now is the time to start becoming the kind of person Wharton is looking for--whether for summer programs or for admission to the undergraduate degree program. If you think about it, the qualifications listed above are much the same as what an admissions committee looks for when considering candidates for college!

Great applications are not created overnight. Younger students, plan now to be in better shape to apply by the priority deadline for 2024. You have about 10 months to get ready! This is especially important for international students, students who need to submit proof of English proficiency and those of you who will apply for scholarships.

No matter what your goals, I hope this message has convinced you to think differently about the "final deadline" listed for any application.
